AUSTRALIA DAY: Honours for legend of rugby Stirling Mortlockā€Ž

STIRLING Mortlock said the secret of his lengthy and successful career in rugby union was enjoyment and hard work.

Mortlock has been made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for service to the sport, particularly as captain of the Wallabies.

“I love everything to do with what I do. I love rugby,” Mortlock said.

Humbled and honoured by the award, he thanked his wife Caroline for her love and support, as well as his extended family.

Mortlock said rugby highlights included his first year in Test rugby and the captaincy of the Wallabies. “It was a great era to be part of ... and to captain in 2007 was a huge honour.”

Mortlock said his professional rugby career began late compared to some of his friends at school.

Goal-setting was a big part of his success, as well as learning from experiences when things didn’t go as planned.

Mortlock has been the captain of Super Rugby team the Melbourne Rebels since 2011. He and his wife, Caroline, have two sons, 9 and 7, and a daughter, 5. The family moved to Melbourne two years ago, but Mortlock, who grew up at Killara, said he believed they would return to Sydney’s north shore. “It’s where I grew up. I love the area, and I love the community,” he said.

I’m pretty confident we’ll move back.”

.......Happy Aussie Day to all!! It's been an amazing day for yours truly. Thanks to everyone for the well wishes #honouredandhumbled - STIRLING TWEET
